Letter from Bowling to Barnum

June 5, 1835
John D. Bowling and R. W. Lindsay

Dear Mr. Barnum:

Please be assured that the African woman, Joice Heth, is truly the nurse maid of General George Washington. We are prepared to provide documentation to this effect, if you are truly interested in the lease and mutual monetary dispersion of exhibition rights and profits.

This proposal in no way stipulates the sale of human property, but instead offers a partnership for the duration of the existing exhibition contract held by Lindsay and Bowling, which expires on June 1st, 1836.
If this arrangement interests you, we would be willing to formalize the agreement for the price of $3000.

Sincerely,

J. D. Bowling
