Barnum Institute of Science and Horror
Estimated Play Date
September 2015 – November 2015
1894 – Bridgeport Connecticut, North East of Fairfield; roughly 3 to 4 hours travel by coach.
The Barnum Institute of Science and History was completed in 1893, and opened on February 18th in the city of Bridgeport. The building is located on Main Street, just a few blocks West of the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat and Ferry (est. 1883 – first ferries began in 1872).
“Every crowd has a silver lining!”
The building was contracted for construction by P.T. Barnum (of Barnum & Bailey Circus) to house the works and collections of the Bridgeport Scientific Society and the Fairfield County Historical Society. The three story building is constructed of stone and terra cotta, with Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic architectural influences. The first floor was to hold commercial establishments, with the upper floors containing the aforementioned societies, resource library, and lecture hall. Unfortunately, Barnum never lived to see the completion of the building, having died on Apr 7, 1891. His Obituary was posted in many newspapers, including the New York Times.
Suspiciously, for reasons unknown, the first floor has remained vacant. Although many preliminary leases and contracts have been signed, clients who were at first excited with the proposition always seem to quickly and mysteriously cancel the deal prior to signing a final agreement. None have provided any explanation; most simply state that they changed their minds, but a few refused to say anything at all, instead simply hurrying off muttering prayers and crossing themselves.
